By: Christine Erickson

It was once thought that the root of the problem was something lurking int he back of a man's mind - some deep seated concern about sex that affected his performance. Nowadays, it is thought that the cause of premature ejaculation is both due to psychological and biological factors.

The problem is, medicine has not yet reached that state where they can identify with precision what exactly causes premature ejaculation for a specific individual. As a result, treatments for premature ejaculation have adapted a shotgun approach that addresses both biological and psychological factors.

There is also a growing belief that erectile dysfunction plays are large role in many men's struggles with premature ejaculation.

But there's good news as well -- today, no man has to suffer from premature ejaculation. Quite a handful of successful treatments have been developed to address this malady. They include a host of medications, psychological counseling and sexual techniques and exercises that can delay or provide greater control over one's orgasm. For most men, combining two or more of these treatments is their best bet.

Here is an explanation of the signs, causes, symptoms and risks that can combine to cause the problem in men. You can use this to assess and judge your own current problems, or determine if you have any future potential risk.

Signs and symptoms No one knows for sure how long a man's ejaculation should take. Hence, there is no generally accepted notion of what is normal and what is premature as far as ejaculations are concerned. Instead, most of the experts agree that premature ejaculation refers to the following -- when a man reaches ejaculation before he and his partner want it in majority of their sexual encounters, that's premature ejaculation. It can take place during masturbation and all other sexual situations, although it may also be limited only to sexual encounters with another person. The experts have identified two general types of premature ejaculation:

1.Primary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have always suffered from premature ejaculation ever since you have been sexually active.

2.Secondary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have been suffering from premature ejaculation only after you enjoyed previously satisfying sexual encounters without such problems.

Causes While the experts have ruled out psychological factors as the sole reason for premature ejaculation, they have not yet reached the point where they can diagnose a specific cause for each individual. Despite this, there have been significant degrees of success achieved in addressing both the biological and psychological factors that cause premature ejaculation. There are four basic psychological causes that can bring about premature ejaculation. These are:

1. Instances when the man had to rush to reach orgasm as he didn't want to be caught int he act by another person.

2. Strong feelings of guilt that make a man rush through his sexual encounters.

3. Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and worry too much about whether they can stay hard throughout the sexual encounter. This may also establish a pattern where a man rushes to ejaculate while he still has an erection.

4. Men who get anxious , particularly about their sexual performance or other matters.

In addition, there are also six basic biological causes that can lead to premature ejaculation. These are:

1.Hormone that is abnormal

2.Levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters that are abnormal

3.Abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system

4.Particular thyroid problems

5.Infection and inflammation of the urethra or prostate

6.Inherited traits

Some doctors have the belief that suffering lifelong Primary Premature Ejaculation is usually a result of biological causes.

Also, some additional rare causes of premature ejaculation can include the following:

1.Damage to the nervous system as a result of trauma or surgery

2.Withdrawal from certain drugs such as narcotics or trifluoperazine ( a treatment for anxiety and other mental disorders).
