Most people know what general dentistry entails. If you don’t here’s a bit of a refresher course – general dentistry focuses on maintaining the health of a patient’s teeth. If the teeth sustain any sort of damage, it can typically be reversed by some sort of procedure (take for example dental caries). While a good number of people don’t have to hassle with more complicated dental procedures, some of us require special dental attention as our teeth have been afflicted with a rather complex and disfiguring problem. When an occurrence as the once described above strikes, cosmetic dentistry comes into play. Cosmetic dentistry tends to focus more on the aesthetic aspect of our teeth rather than the functional aspect. While undergoing a cosmetic dental procedure is rarely a necessity, it can at times become a strong desire, especially for those that (for instance) have crooked or missing teeth. Since cosmetic procedures demand special attention from a dentist, they tend to come bundled with a steep cost. However, many have found that this cost is almost always justifiable. Where’s the point in suffering from a disfiguring dental problem for the remainder of your life, when you can get it repaired for several thousand dollars? So what are some of the things that have made cosmetic dentistry so appealing? For one, the rather small onset of results. With your typical, and more traditional cosmetic dental procedures, you have to wait several months to years to notice any results. Consider braces, for example. One will have to wait anywhere from a few months to a year or so to begin to notice changes brought about by braces. If the same person who got braces were to go into a cosmetic dentist’s office, he/she would have their smile transformed in one or two appointments. Now let’s be honest – you know most people would choose quick results over a more slow and tedious process. Although quicker results to come at the cost of a lighter wallet, think about all the hassle you will be saving yourself. If you’re strongly considering scheduling an appointment at your local cosmetic dentist’s office, but feel shortcomings exist in your ability to pay for a procedure, don’t be discouraged. Many dentists offer financing options for procedures – you can even get some help from your insurance company. The amount of funding you can expect from the above will vary on a case-by-case basis. It’s just important that you remember cosmetic dentistry is never out of reach. May you have the best of luck finding a qualified cosmetic dentist, and may you enjoy your new smile. A word of caution for those looking to rush into the process – don’t. Be sure you do all your homework before contacting any dentists or inquiring about any specific procedure. While many dentists are honest and have their patients’ interests in mind, others are simply out for your money. Choose wisely and allow yourself sufficient time to hunt for a dentist who will serve your needs. Good Luck!
